At McElvy Media Group, we believe our products must have relevance in the everyday lives of our readers, our business partners, our employees and our owners.
It is in that order that we prioritize the management of our company. If we are successful and relevant to the consumers of our products, we are relevant and necessary to our business partners and advertisers. And if we always focus on what’s best for them, our employees and owners are rewarded fairly.
We are not embarrassed or apologetic that our company produces print publications. Though our market share is different than it was 10, 50 or 100 years ago, we are evidence that print publications have a place in the public’s desire for accurate and relevant information, no matter the medium.
We also know, and believe in, the value of digital news and marketing, and our companies offer a full suite of products that allow our business partners to reach any audience they need to succeed in a competitive market.
At our companies, we believe in treating our employees like owners. Our managers understand that, to be successful, we must have employees who are rewarded for understanding the communities – large and small – where we operate our businesses. We believe that every employee should have the chance to grow as a person and a professional. We hire people with character, and we believe the long-term success of our company is dependent on cultivating employees who are eager to become leaders and managers.
The owners of our companies are not motivated, solely, by bottom lines. Instead, we respect the tremendous responsibility we have to provide for our employees and their families. We seek to run efficient companies that remain relevant in the lives of our readers and advertisers and, by doing so, are able to provide for the people who depend on our abilities.
We are not afraid of innovation and we believe that good businesses must not be afraid to fail, as long as they fail cheap. We look for growth opportunities that leverage the brands we own in each community we serve, and we don’t believe there is a box around our skill set. Where there are opportunities, we take them; where there is potential to grow our companies in order to better provide for our employees, their families and our owners, we embrace them.
McElvy Media Group LLC, formed in 2012, began as one community newspaper with eight employees and $850,000 in annual revenue. We print and deliver more than 600,000 copies of our titles in the Houston, Dallas and Charlotte markets, and our websites reach more than 100,000 unique viewers each month.
McElvy Media Group’s affiliates include MVR Publishing LLC, McElvy-Vasquez LLC, Charlotte Media Group LLC and Home Hands Group LLC.
Jonathan McElvy, President and CEO, earned his degree in communications from the University of Alabama, and his first job was at a twice-weekly newspaper in Eufaula, Ala., as a news and sports reporter. He spent five years as an editor and publisher for Boone Newspapers, Inc., with a one-year stint as metro editor for a Gannett-owned newspaper in Montgomery, Ala.
In 2006, McElvy moved to Houston as Editorial Director for a group of 63 weekly newspapers and two dailies at ASP Westward. He transitioned to Vice President for Content & Development in 2008 where monthly website pageviews grew from 300,000 to 1 million in less than a year. The approach of using and repurposing digital content to drive effective and relevant print products helped ASP Westward increase digital revenue while maintaining the power of the print publications and these strategies are still used today at McElvy Media.
In 2012, McElvy, along with his father, Douglas, and brother, Paul, purchased The Leader newspaper, a strong local brand that covers neighborhoods north and northwest of downtown Houston.
In 2014, Charlotte Media Group LLC was formed as an affiliate to purchase three weekly newspapers covering suburban markets in South Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill and Union County.
In 2015, McElvy-Vasquez LLC was formed as an affiliate to purchase the Fort Bend Star and Fort Bend Business Journal, serving communities southwest of downtown Houston in Fort Bend County.
In 2017, Home Hands Group LLC was formed as an affiliate for a home service business that leverages the wide reach of marketing platforms in the McElvy Media Group network.
In 2018, MVR Publishing LLC was formed as an affiliate to purchase the assets of The Greensheet, a shopper publication serving the Houston and Dallas markets with a combined circulation of nearly 500,000 each week.
